If You've Never Attended an ARIN Meeting

ISPs who attend NANOG and ARIN's back-to-back meetings in LA will have a real chance to influence network operations policies for the Americas. ARIN is the American Registry for Internet Numbers, and is responsible for handing out IP addresses and AS numbers in North America and several islands in the Caribbean and North Atlantic.

Attending a two-day Public Policy meeting is key to understanding how ARIN works. The staff from ARIN presents updates and leads a few of the discussions, but any policy recommendations that come out of the meeting come from users and from ARIN's user-based Board of Trustees and Advisory Council. Six to eight members of the Board and Council sit on the front podium throughout the meeting and encourage interaction with attendees.

The LA Public Policy meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, October 26-27, following NANOG. The Members' meeting will be held on Friday, October 28. Both meetings are open to everyone. Once you see ARIN in action you'll realize that it's not the ARIN staff that makes decisions about IP addressing policy -- it's the users themselves. There will also be opportunities for one-on-one conversation with the ARIN staff -- the IP analysts will be available at scheduled times and by appointment throughout both meetings.
