Panel Abstract: Service Provider Route Filtering

Danny McPherson, Amber Networks, moderator
Vijay Gill, MFN
Alex Bligh, GXN
Randy Bush, Verio
Tony Tauber, Genuity

The purpose of this panel is to discuss desired route filtering capabilities of services providers (both panel members and attendees), as well as to express perceived shortcomings with the different components required to effectively support large numbers of prefixes (e.g., routing registries, vendor support, management and provisioning, etc.). It's relatively well understood that service providers need to employ customer ingress prefix filters. However, the feasibility and usefulness of inter-provider filters has yet to be realized. Once fully supported, these filters may potentially be used for other applications as well.

This link provides lots of information about Randy Bush.

Alex Bligh has for five years run or designed IP backbones requiring pragmatic application of interprovider filtering. For much of that time he sat on the board of directors of LINX (the London Internet Exchange), allowing visibility of some of the good and bad effects of different filtering policies.

Positions held by Vijay Gill include systems development and analysis at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Senior Network Architect/Senior Member of the Technical Staff at UUNET. He is currently Senior Architect at Metromedia Fiber Networks.

Over the past six years, Tony Tauber has worked for NEARnet, BBN Planet, GTE Internetworking, and Genuity -- all without changing his office phone number. In that time, Tony has overseen and advised on network architectures and deployments, and has also developed, implemented and maintained backbone, customer and inter-provider policies.
