Abstract: The fundamental differences and similarities between modern research and commodity networks are discussed, as is the history and origin of these two types of networks. I place a special emphasis on tools and protocols to show how research and commodity networks both complement one another, while differentiating themselves from each other. I conclude with a look toward future trends and a discussion of avenues for further collaboration between research and commodity networks.
