Michael J Bennett

Michael Bennett retired from the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the end of April, 2014 and recently started a consulting business to keep actively engaged in Information Communications Technology (ICT). Mike was the Network Engineering Services Group Leader for the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He served on ESnet’s leadership team, and managed network-engineering services supporting data-intensive scientific collaborations around the world. Mike has over 30 years of combined experience in electronics and computer networking. He is an IEEE Standards Association member, a contributor of end-user’s perspective to several Ethernet standards and was Chair of the IEEE P802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet Task Force, publishing IEEE 802.3az-2010TM in October 2010. Mike has been a speaker at a number of industry conferences and panels. He participates in industry forums including The Ethernet Alliance, The Green Grid, and GreenTouch, as well as government incentive activities such as the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program. He has published several whitepapers and coauthored magazine articles, a book chapter, and academic papers. His interest is to work in the industry to improve the energy-efficiency of ICT, seeking to make it energy-proportional.
Abstract: This brief overview of Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) will explain the role EEE plays in making a networked system energy proportional. In 2006, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a study to understand data center energy use trends and recommended a systems-wide approach to achieving energy efficiency. In the same year, the IEEE began work on Energy Efficient Ethernet, which upon completion in 2010, produced another tool in the energy efficiency solution set. The specification includes twisted pair and backplane Ethernet interfaces up to and including 10 gigabits per second, using a method called Low Power Idle (LPI) to reduce energy use when there is no data to send. This presentation examines the motivation for energy proportional networking, provides a high-level view of EEE functionality and concludes with a discussion of opportunities to develop the technology to optimize network energy use.
